About Safely Clever

Safely Clever exists to help people use smart AI safely.

Artificial intelligence is now built into the tools we use to write, search, code, learn and make decisions. The public conversation about its risks tends to swing between hype and alarm. We think people deserve something more useful: clear, accurate explanations of how AI systems work, where they fail, what the companies building them are doing about it, and what you can do to protect yourself, your work and your users.

What we cover

Our coverage is organized around five topic areas:

  • AI Safety Basics: AI safety and alignment explained in plain English, from why chatbots hallucinate to how models are trained and tested.
  • AI Tool Safety Reviews: practical reviews of the privacy, data and safety controls in popular AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot.
  • Responsible AI for Developers: guardrails and best practices for people building AI products, including prompt injection defenses, agent permissions, evaluations and monitoring.
  • AI Risk & Policy: news and analysis on AI laws, government action, incidents and research, explained without the hype.
  • AI Lab Safety Roundups: a weekly look at what OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, Meta and other major labs are doing on safety.

Who we write for

  • Everyday AI users who want to get value from AI tools without giving away more data than they intend or trusting outputs they shouldn’t.
  • Developers and product teams who need practical, current guidance on building safer AI features.
  • Professionals, students and policy watchers who want a reliable briefing on AI risk and regulation.

How we work

We follow a few simple principles, described in full in our editorial policy:

  • Accuracy first. We rely on primary sources such as official documentation, laws, research papers and company policies, and we link to them so you can check our work. We do not invent statistics, quotes or citations.
  • Evidence, not hype. We separate what has been demonstrated from what is claimed or speculated, and we say when something is uncertain.
  • Independence. We don’t accept payment for reviews or coverage. Any future sponsorships or affiliate links will be clearly disclosed and will never influence our assessments.
  • Dated and updated. AI changes quickly. We note when content was last reviewed and update or correct it when facts change.

Who writes Safely Clever

Our guides, reviews and roundups are written by Ellis Marlow (a pen name). Ellis tests AI tools hands-on, reads the safety research, system cards and lab announcements, and explains them in plain English with links to the primary sources. Articles are reviewed by the Safely Clever editorial team. You can see how we review products in How We Test AI Tools.

Our view on AI

We are neither boosters nor doomsayers. AI tools can be genuinely useful, and they carry real risks, some already visible and some still debated. Our goal is to help you understand both, so you can make informed choices. That’s what “Smart AI, used safely” means to us.
